Weep, Then Get Off the Pot

"There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven...and...a time to weep."- The Teacher (Ecclesiastes 3:1,4 NAS)

I am a news junkie. After I hug Kevin in the morning, I sit down and read the paper while eating my breakfast. I drink my coffee while surfing for news on the Web. While making dinner I tune into the Denver channels and check the headlines before I hit the sack. And as I reflected on "a time to weep," I wondered why I keep watching. Most of the news reported by the media isn't good. Sadly, the more I'm bombarded by reports of tsunamis and earthquakes and wars and famine, the less I weep. The problems are so big, and I am so small; my resources are so limited; I am overwhelmed by disaster. Only God can handle problems on a worldwide scale.

Then two weeks ago, I picked up a book when I was in Denver and read it the following weekend. I wept through the whole thing. Being a news junkie, I was already familiar with the themes of suffering and slavery, of famine and disease. It was the good news that made me cry. I saw Jesus. I saw Jesus in the lives of people like you and me. The beauty both broke my heart and called my name.

The book is Max Lucado's Outlive Your Life . The subtitle simply reads, "You were made to make a difference." I found it to be three-fold in its approach: true stories of people making a difference in Jesus' name, practical suggestions for how to get started, and a Biblical foundation for a firm footing in seeking His will. From the humblest of offerings to the grandest of designs, God calls us according to our gifts, our talents, and our resources.
